Rivulet Resort

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to Rivulet Resort – I mean, you’re basically driving past the old Pallivasal Power House, which feels like you’re heading into some forgotten corner of Munnar rather than toward a five-star place. But that’s actually part of what makes this spot so special. The location is tucked away in Chithirapuram, far enough from the main tourist chaos that you’ll actually hear the sound of water flowing nearby (hence the name, I guess) instead of constant honking from tour buses.

The resort itself sits on this hillside where you can see the power lines cutting through the tea estates – which sounds ugly but somehow isn’t. It’s very much a working landscape, you know? Not some sanitized postcard version of Kerala. The rooms are properly luxurious though, with these huge windows that frame the valley views perfectly. I stayed during the monsoon season last year and honestly, watching the mist roll through those tea terraces while staying completely dry and comfortable inside was pretty magical. The staff here actually knows the area – like, when I asked about trekking routes, the front desk guy didn’t just hand me a generic brochure but told me specifically which trails would be muddy after the recent rains and which ones had the best views without the crowds.

What I really appreciated was how they’ve managed to feel upscale without being stuffy about it. The restaurant serves both local Kerala dishes and the usual international stuff, but their fish curry is legitimately good – not the watered-down tourist version you get at most hotel restaurants. Parking is easy, which matters more than you’d think when you’re navigating those winding mountain roads. The pool area gets busy around sunset (everyone wants those golden hour photos), but mornings are usually quiet if you prefer to swim without an audience. Check-in was smooth, though I’d recommend arriving before dark since the signage on the approach road could be better. The 8.5 rating feels about right – it’s definitely a quality place with genuine character, though it’s not trying to be the fanciest resort in Kerala. Sometimes that’s exactly what you want though, especially when you’re paying five-star prices but still want to feel connected to the actual place you’re visiting rather than some generic luxury bubble.
