Sanctuary on the Grove

You know what’s funny about Taupo? Everyone gets caught up in the lakefront hotels and misses these little gems tucked away in the residential streets. Sanctuary on the Grove is one of those places that actually lives up to its name – it’s on this quiet street called Penny Grove, maybe a seven-minute walk from the lake, but it feels worlds away from the tour bus crowds. I mean, you can still hear the odd car, but mostly it’s just birds and the occasional neighbor walking their dog.

The first thing that hit me walking in was how they’ve managed to make a 4-star place feel like someone’s really well-appointed home rather than a hotel. The owner (I think her name was Sarah?) was there when I checked in around 3pm, and she actually knew the area well enough to tell me which cafes would be quiet for working and where to get the best flat white without the tourist markup. Little things like that matter when you’re trying to figure out a new place. The rooms are honestly beautiful – not in that sterile, everything-matches-the-brochure way, but thoughtfully put together with local art and these huge windows that actually open (you’d be surprised how rare that is). Mine looked out toward the mountains, and on clear mornings you could see the peaks perfectly while having coffee.

What really sold me on this place was the attention to details that most hotels just… don’t bother with. The bed was genuinely comfortable – like, I-might-need-to-ask-what-brand-mattress-this-is comfortable. There’s proper blackout curtains for those summer mornings when the sun’s up at 5:30am, and the bathroom had one of those rainfall showers that actually has decent water pressure. Plus they stock local honey and real coffee, not those little sachets of instant stuff. The whole property feels like someone put thought into what travelers actually need versus what looks good in photos. Parking’s easy and free, which honestly saves you a headache in Taupo where some places charge $20 a night. The 9.7 rating makes sense once you’re there – it’s not flashy or over-the-top, but everything just works exactly as it should. If you’re the type who wants to be right in the thick of things on the main strip, this might feel too quiet, but if you appreciate being able to walk to everything while having a peaceful place to come back to, Sanctuary on the Grove gets it exactly right.
