HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know how some places just feel right the moment you walk in? That’s Shoraiso for you. Tucked away in Yamanouchi up in Nagano prefecture, this 5-star ryokan sits in what I’d honestly call one of Japan’s most underrated spots. I mean, everyone rushes to Hakone or Kyoto, but here you’re in proper mountain country where the air actually tastes different – cleaner, sharper, with this faint mineral scent that probably comes from all the hot springs bubbling up everywhere.

The thing about Shoraiso is they’ve managed to nail that balance between traditional Japanese hospitality and the kind of comfort that doesn’t leave you wondering if you’re doing everything wrong. The staff genuinely seem to care about getting the details right, which honestly makes all the difference when you’re navigating cultural nuances. Check-in was smooth – no awkward waiting around – and they actually remembered my dietary restrictions from the booking without me having to explain again. The onsen here is the real deal, by the way. Natural hot spring water that’s supposedly good for your skin, though I can’t prove that scientifically. What I can tell you is that soaking in those outdoor baths while snow monkeys occasionally wander through the area (yes, really) is pretty unforgettable. The indoor baths are perfect for when the weather gets rough, which it does up here.

Room-wise, they’ve got that minimalist Japanese aesthetic down pat without making you feel like you’re sleeping on the floor for the sake of authenticity. Futons are actually comfortable, the tatami smells like fresh grass, and there’s something deeply satisfying about the way everything has its exact place. The kaiseki meals deserve their own paragraph – seasonal ingredients prepared with the kind of attention that borders on obsessive. I’m talking about dishes that change based on what’s literally growing in the valley that week. The mountain vegetables alone are worth the trip, and I say this as someone who usually orders pizza. Service timing is spot-on too; they somehow know exactly when you’re ready for the next course.

What really sets this place apart, though, is the location itself. You’re close enough to Jigokudani Monkey Park that you can actually walk there if you’re feeling ambitious, but far enough from the tour bus crowds that evenings are genuinely peaceful. The surrounding area has these walking trails that locals use – nothing too strenuous, but you’ll work up enough of an appetite to appreciate dinner. Winter transforms everything into this snow-globe situation that’s almost too picturesque to believe, while summer brings wildflowers and hiking weather. Honestly, the 9.5 rating makes sense once you’re there. It’s not perfect – parking can be a bit tight during peak season, and if you don’t speak Japanese, communication occasionally requires some creative gesturing – but those are minor quibbles. This is the kind of place that reminds you why people travel in the first place.

A real authentic Japanese Ryokan experience. The rooms have a private hot spring bath and there is the option to use the public baths as well. The private dining experience was first class food and service. The rooms are large and comfortable with everything you need to relax.

What could be improved: I think they should offer the pickup shuttle during the booking process. We walked from the train station with 3 suitcases in the snow, which was not that far but uphill and a bit inconvenient. However I should have enquired about this myself so it's really not a big deal and the service overall was outstanding

We had a great stay at Shoraiso for our honeymoon in December. Service is unparalleled and the staff are doing above and beyond to make us feel like home without being intrusive. We love the elephant decor of the room and the beautifully landscaped garden, and the private onsen is definitely the highlight of our trip. Breakfast and dinner are included and the food is just exceptional (very tasty with fresh local ingredient and creative presentation). The location is quite convenient - 45min train from Nagano to Yudanaka station and hotel is just a few min drive away (the hotel can arrange pick up). Monkey park is quite close (around 15min taxi away). Overall we couldn’t recommend this hotel more!

What could be improved: Nothing. Everything is perfect.

Loved their public bath and the food

Tracy from United States (7 November 2024)

The staff is kind, it’s a very clean facility and the location is pretty nice.

What could be improved: The bed. Their idea of a western bed is nuts. Worst bed I slept in, in Japan. Maybe one of the worst beds on a vacation - ever. It was like sleeping just on a box springs, no mattress.

What could be improved:

What could be improved: 特にない。
