Slieve Donard

You know that feeling when you round a corner and suddenly think “oh, this is actually perfect”? That’s exactly what happened when I first pulled up to the Slieve Donard. I mean, the building itself is this grand Victorian red-brick beauty that somehow manages to look imposing and welcoming at the same time – it’s been sitting there on the Newcastle seafront since 1898, and honestly, they knew what they were doing back then. The thing that gets you immediately is the location: you’re literally at the foot of the Mourne Mountains (Slieve Donard peak is right there behind the hotel, hence the name), with the Irish Sea stretching out in front. It’s one of those spots where you can have your morning coffee while watching dog walkers on the beach and hikers heading up into the mountains.

The inside lives up to the exterior, though it’s been updated in that careful way that keeps the character intact. The lobby has these gorgeous period details – original fireplaces, oak paneling that actually feels warm rather than stuffy. Check-in was refreshingly smooth, and the staff seemed to genuinely know the area well. My room overlooked the sea, and I spent way too much time just watching the light change over the water. The beds are properly comfortable (you know how hit-or-miss hotel beds can be), and the bathrooms are spacious without being wastefully huge. What I really appreciated were the little things – decent water pressure, blackout curtains that actually work, and windows that open so you can hear the waves. The spa downstairs is worth mentioning too; after a day hiking in the Mournes, that pool felt like heaven.

Here’s what makes this place special though – Newcastle isn’t some massive tourist trap. You’re in a proper seaside town where locals still outnumber visitors most of the year. The hotel sits right where the Mountains of Mourne sweep down to the sea (yes, like the song), so you can literally walk out the front door and be on the beach, or head out the back and start climbing. The Granite Trail begins practically at the hotel’s doorstep if you’re into hiking. For something easier, the promenade walk along the seafront is lovely, especially in the evening when the mountains turn purple-ish in the distance. The hotel restaurant takes advantage of being right on the coast – the seafood is excellent, though I’d recommend booking ahead during summer months. Parking is included, which is actually a big deal because finding a spot in Newcastle during busy weekends can be a nightmare. The 8.5 rating feels about right; it’s genuinely lovely without being precious about it, and the location is just unbeatable if you want to experience this part of Northern Ireland properly.
