Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up to SpiceTree Munnar – you know how these hill station hotels can be hit or miss. But this place actually gets it right. Tucked away in Nadukkurissu along the Muttukad-Periakanal Road, it’s got that perfect balance where you feel properly secluded without being completely cut off from civilization. The drive up is pretty straightforward (thank god, because some of these mountain roads are absolute nightmares), and there’s decent parking which – trust me – matters when you’re hauling luggage up a hill.

What really struck me was how they’ve managed to keep that authentic Munnar vibe without skimping on the comfort stuff. The morning mist rolling through the property is something else entirely, and you can actually smell the spice plantations from your room – it’s not just a marketing gimmick. I mean, sure, it’s a 5-star place so you’d expect nice amenities, but they’ve done it without that sterile luxury hotel feel that makes you afraid to touch anything. The staff genuinely knows the area too, which is refreshing – they’ll tell you about the quieter tea gardens that aren’t overrun with tour groups, or when the best time is to catch the sunrise without freezing your ass off. The 8.7 rating makes sense once you’re there; it’s not perfect (the WiFi can be spotty during heavy rains, and the hot water takes a minute to kick in), but those are pretty minor when you’re surrounded by those rolling hills and the air is so clean it almost feels weird.

The location is actually clever – you’re close enough to Chinnakanal that you can grab supplies or explore without a major expedition, but far enough out that you’re not dealing with the crowds that swarm the main Munnar town. Evenings get quiet here, properly quiet, which is either exactly what you want or slightly unsettling depending on what you’re used to. The restaurant leans into local flavors without being too precious about it, and they actually understand that sometimes you just want a decent cup of coffee and not a whole cultural experience with your breakfast. If you’re planning to visit, avoid the peak season rush in April-May unless you love crowds – the shoulder months are honestly better anyway, with clearer views and more reasonable prices.
