You know what caught me off guard about Sterling Kufri? The drive up there is absolutely wild – you’re winding along NH 22 and suddenly you’re climbing into proper hill station territory, with those classic Himalayan views opening up around every bend. I mean, Kufri itself sits at about 8,600 feet, so you definitely feel that crisp mountain air the moment you step out of your car. The hotel’s positioned right in the thick of it all, close enough to the main Kufri fun park area that you can actually hear kids laughing on the tobogganing runs during peak season (which honestly adds to the charm, though it might not be everyone’s cup of tea if you’re seeking total tranquility).

The property itself has that slightly dated luxury feel – you know, the kind where everything’s clearly expensive and well-maintained, but it’s not trying to be some ultra-modern minimalist retreat. The rooms are spacious (way more than you’d expect for a hill station hotel), and most have these massive windows that frame the valley views pretty spectacularly. I actually spent way too much time just sitting by the window with my morning tea, watching the mist roll through the deodar forests below. The heating works well too, which is crucial because even in summer the temperatures can drop surprisingly fast once the sun goes down. What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night – despite being near the tourist action, there’s something about the mountain setting that just swallows sound.

Here’s the thing though – and I’m being honest here – the service can be a bit hit or miss. Sometimes you get staff who clearly know the area inside and out and can point you toward the best trekking routes or tell you exactly when to visit the Mahasu Peak for the clearest views. Other times, well, it feels like they’re just going through the motions. The restaurant food is solid comfort fare, nothing groundbreaking but exactly what you want after a day of wandering around in the cold mountain air. And practically speaking, if you’re planning to explore beyond Kufri – maybe day trips to Shimla or Chail – the location works perfectly as a base. You’re about 20 minutes from Shimla’s main action but far enough away that you escape the crowds and traffic chaos. Just be prepared for some serious mountain driving, especially if you’re not used to those narrow, winding roads with the occasional monkey blocking traffic.
