You know what struck me first about Sterling Munnar? It’s actually tucked away in Chinnakanal Village – not right in the main Munnar hub where all the tourist buses congregate, which honestly turned out to be a blessing. The drive there winds through some seriously gorgeous tea estates, and I mean the kind where you’ll be stopping every five minutes to take photos even though you swore you wouldn’t be that tourist. The hotel itself sits pretty well positioned to catch those morning mist views that Munnar’s famous for, though I’ll be straight with you – the 6.8 rating isn’t just a number they pulled out of thin air.

The property definitely has that five-star ambition, and in some ways it delivers. The rooms are spacious (which matters when you’re traveling with family and too much luggage), and the staff genuinely seems to know the area well – they pointed me toward some lesser-known viewpoints that weren’t crawling with selfie sticks. The restaurant does a decent job with both local Kerala dishes and the usual continental stuff, though honestly, the local preparations are where they shine. I had this fish curry that was… well, let’s just say I went back for seconds. But here’s the thing – and maybe it’s just because my expectations were set pretty high by that five-star designation – some of the finishing touches felt a bit off. The WiFi was spotty in my room (though fine in the lobby), and the hot water took forever to kick in during morning showers.

What really works about this place is the location for exploring the region. You’re about twenty minutes from the main Munnar town, but that actually puts you closer to some of the better trekking spots and tea factory tours without the crowds. The hotel can arrange visits to the nearby estates, and – this is key – they work with drivers who actually know the back roads, not just the main tourist circuit. I ended up at this tiny spice garden that doesn’t even have a proper sign, just because our driver mentioned it in passing. The evenings are gorgeous here too; there’s something about sitting on those balconies when the mist starts rolling in around sunset that makes you forget about the little inconveniences. Just pack a light jacket because it gets properly cool once the sun goes down, especially during the winter months. Would I stay here again? Probably, but more for the access to authentic Munnar experiences than for luxury hotel vibes – if that makes sense for what you’re looking for.
