THE HOTEL HIGASHIYAMA KYOTO TOKYU, A Pan Pacific Hotel Overview
You know what struck me first about The Hotel Higashiyama? It’s actually tucked right into one of Kyoto’s most atmospheric neighborhoods without feeling like it’s trying too hard to be “authentic.” I mean, you’re literally a two-minute walk from Shirakawa area – that’s the postcard-perfect stretch where traditional wooden buildings line the narrow canal and you’ll spot geishas heading to appointments if you’re lucky with timing. The hotel itself sits on Sanjo-dori, which honestly can get a bit busy during the day, but once you’re inside, the street noise just melts away.
The building has this understated elegance that feels very Tokyo modern meets Kyoto traditional – not in an over-the-top way, but more like someone who actually understands both cities designed it. The lobby’s got these gorgeous wood elements and stone details that echo the neighborhood’s aesthetic without being a theme park version of it. What I really appreciated was how the staff seemed to genuinely know the area – when I asked about avoiding crowds at nearby temples, the concierge gave me specific time windows and alternative routes that clearly came from real experience, not a guidebook. The rooms themselves are what you’d expect from a solid four-star property, but it’s the little touches that matter – like how the windows frame views of the surrounding traditional rooftops, and the bathrooms have that perfect Japanese attention to detail (the shower pressure is excellent, by the way).
Here’s the thing about staying in Higashiyama – you’re basically in the heart of historic Kyoto, which means you can walk to Kiyomizu-dera, wander through the preserved Sannenzaka and Ninenzaka streets, and hit up some incredible local restaurants without needing any transportation. But it also means you’re in tourist central, so mornings are your friend if you want those Instagram shots without crowds. The hotel’s location is honestly perfect for this – you can slip out early, do your temple visits, then retreat back when the tour buses arrive. I found the evenings particularly magical around here, when the day-trippers clear out and you get to experience what this neighborhood feels like for locals. The hotel’s restaurant is solid too, though with places like Kikunoi just a reasonable walk away (if you’re feeling fancy), you’ve got options. One small thing – parking can be tricky in this area, but the hotel handles it well with valet service. At 8.9 rating, it’s clearly doing something right, and after staying there, I get why people keep coming back.
