I mean, let’s be real about location here – you’re literally a five-minute walk from the Baseball Hall of Fame, but more importantly, you’re right on the lake where James Fenimore Cooper set his novels. The hotel sits on this perfectly manicured lawn that rolls down to the water, and if you snag a lake-view room, you’ll understand why people come back year after year. The rooms themselves have that elegant-but-not-stuffy vibe – think original hardwood floors and period furniture that’s actually comfortable to sit on. The bathrooms are updated (crucial detail, trust me), and honestly, the beds are fantastic. Fair warning though: if you’re here during Hall of Fame weekend in July, book way ahead and expect it to be buzzing with baseball fans.

What really sets this place apart is how it nails that whole “historic resort” thing without feeling like a museum. The Hawkeye Bar & Grill has this incredible terrace overlooking the lake where you can grab dinner and watch the sunset – and their burgers are actually good, not just “hotel restaurant good.” The golf course (Leatherstocking Golf Course) is right there if that’s your thing, and it’s genuinely beautiful even if you just walk it. During summer, there’s this lovely lazy energy where families are playing on the lawn, people are reading on the wraparound porch, and you can hear the gentle lapping of the lake. Service is spot-on too – the staff clearly knows the hotel’s history and the area, so they’re great for recommendations beyond just the obvious tourist stuff. It’s pricey, sure, but when you’re sipping coffee on that porch in the morning, watching the mist come off Otsego Lake with the Adirondacks in the distance, you sort of get why this place has been drawing people for over a century.
