So here’s the thing about The Ritz-Carlton at Dove Mountain – it’s actually tucked way up in the foothills of the Tortolita Mountains, which means you’re driving about 20 minutes north of anything resembling civilization in Marana. But honestly? That’s exactly the point. The moment you wind up Secret Springs Drive and see this place sprawling across the desert landscape, you get why they built it out here in the middle of nowhere.
The resort sits on what feels like thousands of acres of pristine Sonoran Desert, and I mean pristine – we’re talking about those perfect saguaro cacti that look like they’re posing for postcards, plus javelinas that’ll wander right past your casita around sunset. The accommodations are these standalone casitas and suites that feel more like luxury desert homes than hotel rooms, with private patios where you can actually hear… well, nothing except maybe a coyote in the distance. The spa here is something else entirely – they do this thing called a “desert stone massage” using heated stones from the surrounding mountains, and after spending a day hiking the Tortolita foothills, it’s basically mandatory. You know what really got me though? The golf courses (there are two) blend so seamlessly into the natural desert that you’ll find yourself putting around actual saguaros and desert washes. The Jack Nicklaus signature course is tougher, but the views of the Catalina Mountains from the back nine are absolutely ridiculous.
Food-wise, the main restaurant sources a lot from local Tucson farmers – their prickly pear margaritas aren’t just a gimmick, they’re actually incredible. The service has that Ritz-Carlton thing where they remember your name and coffee order by day two, but without the stuffiness you might expect. One small thing – if you’re coming in summer (which, let’s be real, you probably shouldn’t unless you love 110-degree heat), the pool area becomes your entire world from about 10 AM to 6 PM. But spring and fall? That’s when this place really shines. You can hike the property’s trails in the morning, play golf without melting, and sit on your patio at night watching the most insane star show you’ve ever seen – there’s almost zero light pollution out here. The only downside is that you really need a car since you’re so far from everything, and dinner reservations book up quickly during peak season (February through April). But if you’re looking for that authentic Arizona desert experience without roughing it, this is pretty much as good as it gets.

We loved almost everything: starting from a very nice room and pet friendly policy, the service (patience, politeness, always ready to inform and help), the facility: the building, the resort with many paths for walks also with dogs. The both pools are very nice. Good bikes available for rides around the area.

Gorgeous setting and grounds. Fabulous spa. Exceptional employees. Cayton’s for casual dining was excellent with a wonderful guitarist on Christmas Eve. Christmas endless buffet was massive but the food was so so. Ignite off the lobby was so so, too. Disappointing. Spa was fantastic!!
