HOTEL OVERVIEW

You know that moment when you walk into a place and immediately think “okay, this is why people save up for special trips”? That’s exactly what happened when I stepped into The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto. I mean, the location alone is pretty incredible – it’s right along the Kamogawa River, and honestly, I spent way too much time just standing on their terrace watching the water flow by. The thing is, most luxury hotels in Kyoto either go full traditional ryokan or completely modern, but this place actually nails that tricky balance between contemporary luxury and authentic Japanese design.

What really got me was how they’ve positioned everything. You’re literally a five-minute walk from Nishiki Market (which, let’s be real, you’ll probably visit three times because the food situation there is insane), and Gion district is close enough that you can easily wander over for dinner without dealing with taxis or figuring out the subway system. The staff – and I’m usually pretty skeptical about over-the-top service – genuinely seemed to know their stuff about the city. Like, when I mentioned wanting to find good tempura that wasn’t touristy, the concierge didn’t just hand me a generic list. He actually drew a little map showing me which entrance to use at this place near Pontocho Alley and warned me they only serve lunch until 2 PM.

The rooms themselves feel spacious in a way that’s rare for Japan, and those river-facing ones? Worth the upgrade if you can swing it, especially during cherry blossom season (though honestly, book that like six months ahead). I stayed in November, which turned out to be perfect timing – fewer crowds, incredible fall colors along the river, and you could actually enjoy the outdoor terrace areas without melting. The spa was this unexpected highlight too; they do this thing where they incorporate traditional Japanese bathing culture but in a completely luxurious setting. It’s not trying to be an authentic onsen experience, but it doesn’t need to be. The breakfast situation deserves a mention – yes, it’s expensive, but watching them prepare everything while you sit overlooking the river… I mean, there are worse ways to start your day in Kyoto. The only real downside I noticed was that the lobby can get pretty crowded during peak checkout times, and if you’re staying during cherry blossom season, expect everything from restaurants to elevators to move a bit slower. But honestly? When you’re paying Ritz-Carlton prices and getting this kind of location with service that actually feels personal rather than scripted, those feel like pretty minor trade-offs.

Room is spacious and well designed. Plenty space for tea time or in room dining . Good at winter or when u bought bento from takashimaya basement.
There is a sofa besides very generous dining table and chairs.
Bed is super comfortable.
Breakfast high light: croissant and egg.
Lots room to place luggages. We had 14 pieces there and still feel spacious.

What could be improved: Bf: my son had Japanese bf and got food poisoned 2 hrs after. He was vomiting 5 times and destroyed his plan for Kitcho. We went there without him. A big disaster for him.
The breakfast staff placed us at bad tables twice. First day placed by two energetic kids. 2nd day placed us next to a lady had none stopping speech over 1.5 hrs. Our entire bf time. None of the staff offer table switch or try to make these guest quiet.

What could be improved: Now it’s 1 week after we checked out, and until now we didn’t get the deposit money from them. More than 1 million yen. We will never go back there. And it feels that the stuff there dont really care about the situation. We stayed in other hotels in Japan for this trips, zero problems with the rest of them .

The property is beautiful. Staff are fantastic and so helpful and friendly. The gym and spa are also great. We weightlift and they had more than the usual equipment for a hotel so that was nice. The bar and restaurants are also really good. We love Ritz Carlton and this one is a wonderful location. Right in the heart of Kyoto. It’s easy to walk...
