HOTEL OVERVIEW
You know what hits you first when you pull up to The Scottsdale Plaza Resort? It’s honestly not what you’d expect from a place right on Scottsdale Road. I mean, you’re literally minutes from all the Old Town chaos and those ridiculously expensive galleries, but somehow this place feels like it exists in its own little bubble. The Spanish Colonial architecture actually works here – and I say that as someone who’s seen way too many desert resorts trying too hard with the whole adobe thing.
The property sprawls out more than you’d think from the street view, which is perfect because it means you’re not hearing every conversation from the pool when you’re trying to sleep. Speaking of pools – there are multiple ones, and honestly, the main one gets pretty packed during snowbird season (basically October through April), but there’s this smaller pool near the villas that locals seem to know about. The staff doesn’t make a big deal about which one you use, which I appreciate. Parking is actually free, which feels like a minor miracle when you consider that some places in Scottsdale will charge you twenty bucks just to look at their valet stand. The rooms themselves have that updated-but-not-trying-too-hard vibe – you’ll find granite countertops and decent WiFi, but they haven’t gone overboard with the whole “desert chic” thing that makes some places feel like themed restaurants.
What really sets this place apart, though, is how it handles the whole resort experience without making you feel trapped. You can easily walk to Mayo Clinic if you’re here for medical stuff (which, let’s be honest, a lot of people are), and you’re close enough to hit Kierland Commons for decent shopping without the Old Town tourist markup. The on-site dining is solid – not mind-blowing, but way better than it needs to be for a place that could easily coast on location. Their breakfast actually includes real coffee, not that generic hotel stuff that tastes like it was brewed in a shoe. The spa gets busy on weekends, but if you book treatments during weekday afternoons, it’s like having the place to yourself. One thing I really noticed – and this might sound weird – but the hallways don’t have that weird hotel carpet smell that makes you wonder what happened before you got there. It’s those little details that make you realize someone actually cares about running this place well, not just filling rooms.
