THE THOUSAND KYOTO Overview
Honestly, when I first walked into The Thousand Kyoto, I wasn’t sure what to expect – the name sounds a bit dramatic, you know? But the moment you step through those doors, you get it. This place sits right in Shimogyo-ku, which means you’re literally a five-minute walk from Kyoto Station (actually super handy when you’re dragging luggage), but somehow they’ve managed to create this incredible sense of calm that makes you forget you’re near one of Japan’s busiest transport hubs.
What really got me was how they’ve nailed that balance between modern luxury and authentic Japanese aesthetics without falling into the trap of looking like a theme park. The rooms – and I mean this – actually feel like spaces where someone thoughtful lives, not just sleeps. You’ll find these beautiful wooden accents that smell faintly of hinoki cypress, and the bathrooms have those deep soaking tubs that make you wonder why Western hotels even bother with regular bathtubs. The staff here operates on that next-level Japanese hospitality that’s almost intimidating until you realize they genuinely want to help you have the best possible stay. I watched them spend twenty minutes drawing a custom map for guests trying to find a specific temple in Gion – that’s just how they roll.
The location is honestly perfect if you’re doing the Kyoto thing properly. You’re close enough to walk to Nijo Castle (about fifteen minutes if you don’t mind the stroll), and catching trains to Fushimi Inari or Arashiyama is ridiculously easy. But here’s what I really appreciated – the neighborhood around Higashishiokojicho has this great mix of tiny local restaurants and convenience stores, so you can grab amazing ramen at 11 PM or stock up on those weird Kit Kat flavors without trekking across the city. The hotel’s restaurant is solid too, though I’ll be honest, some of the best meals I had were at the little izakaya just two blocks over that the concierge recommended.
What sets this place apart from other luxury hotels in Kyoto is that it doesn’t feel like you’re staying in a bubble. The design lets in natural light beautifully, the common areas actually invite you to linger (not just pass through), and somehow the whole place maintains this serene atmosphere even when it’s fully booked. I stayed during cherry blossom season – probably the most chaotic time to visit Kyoto – and while the city was absolutely packed, coming back to The Thousand felt like stepping into a different world entirely. Fair warning though, rooms book up months in advance during peak seasons, and honestly, after staying here, I understand why.
The finest healing hotels of the world feature renowned spa treatments, nutritional programs, and mindfulness practices that have attracted wellness seekers for generations.

The Thousand is a beautiful hotel. The room was well sized with a huge, very comfortable bed. We had the Western breakfasts which were more than adequate. The position was outstanding, right next to Kyoto station, and helpful utilising the amenities...
Great location and good sized rooms
What could be improved: Only thing I hated was everything being controlled by 1 iPad. We put baby to sleep and then couldn’t control the lights or other curtains as it was 1 central system
Close to Kyoto Station but on quiet side street
