The Vineyard Hotel & Spa Overview
You know what? I’ve driven past The Vineyard Hotel & Spa dozens of times on the A4 heading between London and Bath, always wondering what it was like inside that sprawling estate tucked behind the trees in Stockcross. Well, I finally got my chance last spring, and honestly – it’s one of those places that makes you feel slightly guilty for enjoying luxury this much.
The first thing that hits you isn’t the opulent lobby or the perfectly manicured grounds (though both are lovely), it’s how quiet everything is. I mean, you’re literally a stone’s throw from the A4, but somehow the sound just… disappears. The reception staff actually remembers your name without glancing at a computer screen, which is refreshing, and check-in feels more like being welcomed into someone’s very posh country home than processing through a hotel system. The rooms – well, mine overlooked the vineyard rows that give the place its name, and there’s something deeply satisfying about watching the morning mist roll across those vines while you’re sipping coffee in a proper bathrobe. The beds are the kind where you sink in just enough without feeling like you’re being swallowed whole, and the bathrooms have that perfect lighting that doesn’t make you look like a zombie at 6 AM.
What really sets this place apart though is how it manages to feel both grand and unpretentious at the same time. The spa is genuinely excellent – I’m usually skeptical of hotel spas, but their treatments actually live up to the hype, and the thermal suite has these heated loungers that I may have monopolized for an embarrassing amount of time. The restaurant sources ingredients from local suppliers around Newbury and the Lambourn Valley, and you can actually taste the difference (their Sunday roast is particularly good if you can snag a table). The wine list is extensive without being intimidating, which makes sense given they’re literally sitting on their own vineyard. Parking is straightforward and free, which shouldn’t be noteworthy but somehow always is. The only minor quibble I have is that the WiFi can be a bit patchy in some of the older sections of the building, but honestly, that might be a feature rather than a bug depending on why you’re there.
If you’re looking for a proper countryside escape that’s still accessible – Newbury station is maybe ten minutes away if you’re coming up from London by train – this is the kind of place that reminds you why people rave about English country hotels. It’s expensive, sure, but not offensively so for what you get, and the staff genuinely seems to enjoy working there, which always shows. Plus, you’re perfectly positioned for exploring the Cotswolds or hitting the races at Newbury if that’s your thing.

Lovely clean large rooms
Really amazing staff. Nice spacious rooms. Bar and restaurant was wonderful.
Great location. Good facilities, excellent gourmet menu and wine selection. Reasonable spa facilities, generous size rooms and bathrooms. Excellent cutlery and linen. Plenty of parking space, light airy reception. Well staffed.
Lovely room and set I’ve from friendly staff.
Excellent food and wine.
Bit like a ‘Swan’. Gracefully & effortlessly immaculate whilst ‘underneath the water’ they must be paddling like mad to keep this looking as pristine as it appears.
Great location and facilities.
Excellent Spa.
Very friendly helpful staff.
Good location for where we needed to I be
Well trained and plenty of staff. They greeted me by name at the door and walked us to our room explaining the hotel. There were tears in the room for my birthday. The spa has mixed sauna and steam so unlike Champneys couples can go to these...
