HOTEL OVERVIEW

Honestly, I wasn’t sure what to expect when I first pulled up Scenic Drive to Waitakere Resort & Spa – the road winds through some pretty dense bush, and for a moment you wonder if your GPS is leading you astray. But then you round this corner and there it is, nestled into the Waitakere Ranges like it’s been there forever. The parking’s actually decent (which matters more than you’d think when you’re hauling luggage), and the whole place has this understated elegance that feels more authentic than flashy.

What really gets me about this spot is how they’ve managed to make a 4-star property feel intimate without being cramped. The spa – well, that’s where they really shine. I mean, you can hear the native birds chattering away while you’re getting a massage, which beats the hell out of generic spa music any day. The treatment rooms look out into the bush, and you know what? Sometimes you’ll spot a tui or kereru if you’re lucky. The pool area’s quite nice too, though it can get a bit busy during school holidays when the Auckland families descend. The restaurant does solid work with local ingredients – their lamb’s particularly good, and they know their way around New Zealand wines. Service is friendly without being over-the-top, which I appreciate.

Location-wise, you’re about 30 minutes from central Auckland (traffic depending, obviously), but it feels like you’re in a completely different world. Titirangi village is just down the road if you want a proper coffee or to browse some local art galleries, and you’re perfectly positioned for tackling some of the better bush walks in the ranges – the Waitakere Dam track’s lovely if you don’t mind a bit of uphill. The rooms are comfortable enough, though some of the bathrooms could use a refresh. Air conditioning works well, which you’ll need in summer, and most rooms have decent bush views. I’d say it’s a solid choice if you want to escape the city buzz without completely roughing it, though at a 7.7 rating, you’re getting exactly what you pay for – good, not spectacular, but definitely worth it for the setting alone.

The staff were amazing, very helpful. Location is beautiful and on point. Will recommend to family.

What could be improved: The smell in room 33 is very musty!!! It smelled like damp feet and toe jams.

Loved my stay here for my birthday with my Mum. Comfortable beds and rain head shower appreciated. Very clean. Salt water pool was gorgeous. Need a few more deck chairs around the pool and signage for room finding as got very lost. Got to breakfast at 9.30am and table not cleared and had to request items be topped up. Told it was a busy morning...

Told it was a busy morning. However, as a paying guest, I didn't need to know that. Breakfast was delicious. Reception at check in/out ok but not great. Didn't acknowledge it was my birthday.

We had our own private villa which was well set out and had a big fridge/freezer

What could be improved: There was no air con and the kitchen is really a kitchenette

i loved being secluded and surrounded by greenery, it provided so much serenity. I loved the nearby hiking trails and views. What could be improved: breakfast was bland for me, i voluntarily missed out on a few days of the included breakfast because of lack of variety (but i’m an extremely picky eater). the staff were lovely though. Uber/ride shares are difficult to get due to the location, so if you plan to stay here, hire a car.
