Wanderlust – Queenstown Holiday Home Overview
You know what struck me first about Wanderlust? The name actually fits. This isn’t one of those places where marketing got carried away – it really does have that cozy, lived-in feel that makes you want to extend your stay in Queenstown by a few more days. Located on Stalker Road (which sounds way more ominous than it actually is), you’re tucked into a residential area that feels refreshingly removed from the tourist circus down on Shotover Street, but honestly, you’re still close enough to walk into town when the mood strikes.
The thing about staying here is that you get this genuine slice of how locals actually live. I mean, you’re surrounded by regular Kiwi homes, not just endless rows of hotels and backpacker lodges. In the mornings, you’ll hear birds that aren’t seagulls fighting over tourist scraps – actually native ones. The 8.8 rating makes sense once you settle in; it’s not trying to be fancy (it’s a solid 3-star spot), but everything just… works. The kitchen’s properly equipped, which is a godsend considering how much you’ll spend eating out otherwise in Queenstown. I actually ended up cooking breakfast most mornings and eating it while looking out at the surrounding hills, which beat fighting for a table at some overpriced café.
What I really appreciated was how quiet it gets at night. Stalker Road doesn’t get the party crowd stumbling home at 3 AM like you’d deal with closer to the center. You can actually sleep with the windows open – well, when it’s not freezing, which let’s be honest, happens more often than you’d expect even in summer. The owners clearly know what matters to travelers who aren’t just passing through for a night. There’s proper storage space, decent Wi-Fi (crucial when you’re uploading all those Milford Sound photos), and the kind of shower pressure that makes you forget you’re in a holiday rental. Plus, parking’s sorted, which anyone who’s driven around central Queenstown will tell you is worth its weight in gold.
The location ended up being perfect for my routine – morning runs along the lake were just a few minutes away, and I discovered this little track that locals use that connects back toward Fernhill. You’re also positioned well for day trips; whether you’re heading to Glenorchy, Arrowtown, or catching one of those tour buses, you don’t have to navigate through the town center chaos to get going. Honestly, after a few days of Queenstown’s beautiful but relentless tourist energy, coming back to Wanderlust felt like exhaling. It strikes that sweet spot between being close enough to everything that matters but far enough away that you remember why you came to New Zealand in the first place – for those moments of quiet beauty, not just the adrenaline rush.
