Yufuin Kotobuki Hananosho Overview
You know what hit me first about Yufuin Kotobuki Hananosho? The smell of tatami and hinoki cypress the moment you step inside – it’s that authentic ryokan scent that tells you this isn’t some tourist trap trying to fake traditional Japanese hospitality. This place sits quietly on the Kawakami side of Yufuin, which honestly is perfect because you’re close enough to walk to Lake Kinrinko (maybe 10 minutes if you don’t get distracted by the local pottery shops), but far enough from the main Yufuineki station chaos that you actually feel like you’re in the countryside.
The rooms here are what I’d call “thoughtfully traditional” – they’ve got the proper futon setups and low tables, but they’re not making you rough it just for authenticity’s sake. The onsen situation is really where this place shines though. Their outdoor bath faces toward Mount Yufu, and if you time it right in the early morning (I’m talking 6 AM when most people are still sleeping), you’ll have it practically to yourself with just the sound of bamboo swaying and maybe some birds chattering. The water’s got that slightly sulfuric mineral tang that means it’s the real deal, not some fancy hotel spa trying to recreate the experience. I mean, the indoor baths are perfectly fine too, but why would you choose walls over mountain views?
What really sets this place apart from some of the flashier ryokans in central Yufuin is the staff – they actually seem to care about getting the details right rather than just going through the motions. The kaiseki dinner changes with the seasons (obviously), but they’re using a lot of local Oita ingredients, including this amazing wagyu that’s somehow both rich and delicate. Breakfast is served in your room, which sounds fancy but is actually just really practical since you’re probably moving slowly after soaking in hot springs for half the evening. The whole experience feels genuine in a way that’s getting harder to find as Yufuin becomes more popular with day-trippers from Fukuoka. Sure, it’s not the cheapest option in the area, and the building itself isn’t going to win any modern architecture awards, but sometimes you want a place that does the classics really well instead of trying to reinvent everything.

Guest Reviews
I booked a big room for just two with indoor onsen. Though even for a full size family, the room is quite big in Japan. Great location, spotless maintenance which is very difficult to obtain for rooms with a private hot spring bath. Food is perfect,...
Booked Japanese style room. Room was slightly old but serviceable, very spacious. Onsen was good.
What could be improved: No clear signs for hotel when walking from station, especially dark at night
Overall the Tatami room is comfortable and nice.
The Onsen is good.
Staff is professional and friendly.
breakfast and dinner are very good. Onsen is good too.
Cozy hotel at convenient location. Facilities are a bit old, but overall well maintained and clean.
Onsen was great, sleeping on the tatami at the hotel was very comfy, the room was nice and dark when blinds are closed. There's a view and the location is convenient. What could be improved: The hotel is relatively old. However the price is...
