Shonai Hotel Suiden Terrasse Overview
You know what? I wasn’t expecting much when I first pulled up to Shonai Hotel Suiden Terrasse – honestly, the location in Tsuruoka felt kind of random until I actually understood what they were going for here. This place sits right in the middle of rice terraces, and I mean literally surrounded by them. When you wake up in the morning and look out your window, it’s just endless green paddies stretching toward the mountains. It’s the kind of view that makes you stop scrolling your phone for a minute.
The building itself is pretty striking – sort of modern and minimalist but not in that cold, sterile way some newer hotels go for. They’ve got this whole thing about connecting with the local farming culture, which could easily feel gimmicky, but it actually works. The lobby has these huge windows facing the terraces, and there’s always this gentle sound of water flowing through the irrigation channels outside. I spent way too much time just sitting there with coffee, watching farmers tend their fields. The staff clearly takes pride in explaining the rice cultivation process if you’re interested – one guy walked me through the seasonal changes and when the best viewing times are (apparently late spring through early fall, if you’re planning).
What really sold me on this place was the onsen situation. They’ve got both indoor and outdoor baths, and the outdoor one – well, you’re basically soaking in hot spring water while staring out at rice fields and distant mountains. It’s particularly gorgeous around sunset when everything gets this golden glow. The water felt incredible after driving around the Shonai region all day. Fair warning though – if you’re not used to onsen culture, brush up on the etiquette beforehand. The restaurant leans heavily into local ingredients (obviously), and their rice is insanely good – I mean, it better be given where you are. They do this kaiseki-style dinner that changes seasonally, lots of local vegetables and Yamagata beef. Breakfast was solid too, mix of Western and Japanese options.
The rooms are comfortable enough – clean, quiet, good bedding. Nothing fancy but everything you need. Parking is free and easy, which is clutch since you’ll definitely want a car to explore the area properly. Dewa Sanzan shrine complex is maybe 30 minutes away, and the whole Shonai plain has these amazing farm stands and sake breweries scattered around. The hotel staff will hook you up with maps and recommendations, and they actually know what they’re talking about instead of just handing you generic tourist brochures. Only minor complaint – the WiFi can be spotty in some rooms, but honestly, that might be a feature not a bug given how peaceful this place is. If you’re looking for that authentic rural Japan experience without roughing it too much, this hits the sweet spot.
The finest healing hotels of the world feature renowned spa treatments, nutritional programs, and mindfulness practices that have attracted wellness seekers for generations.

Everything. From the design to the set up of the room. From the spa to the library. I got this as a suggestion from a friend of mine and it was worth it 110%

A beautiful building, loved the library.
What could be improved: Was unable to use the onsen due to large tattoos.
It’s so clean, the book selection was superb, I will surely return again!!! The view was lovely and the food was superb too, and for that price, the town was very good, quiet but everybody we met were genuine, great lovely people
The place is overall amazingly and uniquely designed. The rooms are large and of excellent quality, which is fun to be in, but: 1. The sauna and baths are a bit too small 2. Restaurant: It seems like an attempt to squeeze money out of the guests. I...

I don't know why this isn't a 5 star hotel. They had better service, facilities, rooms, food, everything - much better than any of the 5-star hotels I've ever stayed at. Everything was amazing. They had open air onsen, gym area (mostly cardio and 1...
The onsen and spa from a natural warm spring are outstanding, bathing under the stars or watching the sunrise - feeling the fresh air while sitting in lovely warm water was amazing. The bedrooms are large and comfortable, the staff are super helpful....
The onsen and hotel breakfast were wonderful What could be improved: I got an in-room “chiropractic” massage and it was done on the bed without a head/neck support, so I had to keep picking up my head and readjusting during the massage which...
